"Lucas em Busca da Esfera"

"Lucas em Busca da Esfera" was a game made at the SBGames Game Jam "Drug Prevention Themed Design Contest". We only had 48 hour to create this game from scratch. This is an Educational Game targeted at young people in schools. The game mechanics consists in controlling a yellow box called “Lucas”, whose biggest dream is to become a ball. To reach the big blue ball the player needs to control Lucas through a road and avoid the red pyramids. We represented Lucas’s life by a road, and in the end of this road there’s the big blue ball, that represents Lucas’s dreams and objectives. Like us, Lucas has dreams and goals. In this road there are a lot of red pyramids, they hurt Lucas and does he fail. These pyramids represent obstacles and difficulties in our lives. In the game there’s also some “Specials”, they help lucas to avoid the pyramids. By a short time these “Specials” seems to help Lucas, and things seem to be easier. But every time Lucas uses these “Specials”, after the effect ceases the pyramids grow and is more difficult to avoid them. At the end, when the player wins, we tell the player the analogy between Lucas’s life and our lives. And we compare these “Specials” with drugs. The first special is like the alcohol effect, Lucas thinks that he is bigger than he actually is and destroy all the pyramids just by touching them. The second is compared to “Marijuana”. With them, Lucas flies above the pyramids. And the last one is compared to cocaine, by using it Lucas is “invisible” by society’s eyes. If the player collect lots of these specials, it becomes impossible to reach the end of the road, because the pyramids will become bigger and bigger, and it will be impossible to pass through them (We tried to show that if people use drugs they won’t reach their dreams and objectives). The only way to win the game is if the player reaches the end of the road without using these “Specials”.
